How Does Orthognathic Surgery Work?

Orthognathic surgery is typically performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The surgeon will first assess the patient's teeth, jaws, and bite to determine if orthognathic surgery is necessary. If orthognathic surgery is determined to be the best course of treatment, the surgeon will then develop a customized treatment plan for the patient.

During orthognathic surgery, the surgeon will make incisions in the mouth in order to access the jawbone. The surgeon will then reposition the bones and tissues in the jaw in order to create a more ideal bite. In some cases, orthognathic surgery  may also involve the placement of implants or other devices in order to support the new position of the jaw.
