Dental Implants in Cupertino: What to Know Before Your Consultation

If you are considering dental implants, you probably have questions. How do they work? How long does the process take? What will it cost? Will it hurt? This guide covers everything Cupertino patients need to know about dental implants before scheduling a consultation.

Why Dental Implants Are the Gold Standard

When a tooth is lost, three things happen over time: the jawbone beneath the gap shrinks, the neighboring teeth start shifting, and your bite changes. Dentures and bridges address the visible gap but do nothing to stop the bone loss underneath. Dental implants are the only replacement option that addresses all three problems. The titanium implant post integrates with the jawbone through osseointegration, preserving bone density and providing a permanent, stable foundation for a crown, bridge, or full arch prosthesis.

Types of Dental Implants Available in Cupertino

At Cupertino Oral & Facial Surgery, Dr. Brian Lee offers several implant approaches depending on your situation:

Single tooth implants replace one missing tooth with one implant and one custom crown. This is the most common type and preserves the health of the teeth on either side (unlike a bridge, which requires grinding them down).

Implant-supported bridges use two or more implants to support a bridge replacing several adjacent missing teeth. This is more cost-effective than placing individual implants for each tooth.

Full mouth implant reconstruction uses four to six implants per arch to support a complete set of fixed teeth. This is designed for patients who are missing all or most teeth and want a permanent alternative to removable dentures.

The Dental Implant Process Step by Step

Consultation and imaging. Your journey starts with a thorough evaluation at our Cupertino office. Dr. Lee uses our CBCT 3D scanner and digital scanning technology to create a detailed 3D map of your jawbone, nerves, and sinus anatomy. This information determines whether you are a candidate, where implants should be placed, and whether any preparatory work is needed.

Preparatory procedures (if needed). If bone loss has occurred, bone grafting rebuilds the jaw to support implant placement. Common grafting procedures include socket preservation (at the time of extraction), ridge augmentation, and sinus lifts. Grafting adds 3 to 6 months to the timeline but makes implant placement possible for patients who would otherwise not qualify.

Implant placement. The titanium implant post is placed into the jawbone under IV sedation or nitrous oxide for your comfort. The procedure typically takes 30 to 90 minutes per implant.

Healing (osseointegration). Over 3 to 6 months, the implant fuses with the jawbone. During this time, you may wear a temporary restoration so you are not without teeth.

Final restoration. Your restorative dentist fabricates and attaches the permanent crown, bridge, or prosthesis. The result looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost in Cupertino?

Cost varies based on the number of implants, whether bone grafting is needed, and the type of final restoration. General ranges in the South Bay area:

Single tooth implant: $3,500 to $6,500 (implant, abutment, and crown combined)

Implant-supported bridge: $6,000 to $15,000 (two or more implants plus bridge)

Full mouth reconstruction: $20,000 to $50,000 per arch (implants, temporary teeth, final prosthesis)

Dr. Lee provides a detailed cost estimate during your consultation so there are no surprises. We accept most major PPO dental and medical insurance plans. For patients without coverage, we offer CareCredit financing and payment plans to make treatment accessible.

Recovery: What to Expect

Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort for the first 2 to 3 days after implant placement. Swelling peaks around day 2 and resolves over the following days. A soft food diet is recommended for the first 1 to 2 weeks. Most patients return to work within 1 to 3 days for single implant cases. Full arch cases may require 5 to 7 days of recovery.

Am I a Candidate?

Most adults in reasonable overall health are candidates for dental implants. Factors that Dr. Lee evaluates during your consultation include bone density and volume (assessed with 3D imaging), overall health and any chronic conditions, medications that may affect healing, smoking status, and the specific teeth being replaced. If bone loss is present, grafting can often make implant placement possible. Age alone is not a disqualifying factor.
